Sustainable Settings
During my freshman year at Yampah, I worked at Sustainable Settings in Carbondale for one of my interim requirements. Sustainable Settings is a farming operation dedicated to using sustainable living practices that respect our planet, the life that inhabits it, and the resource limitations that exist.
I spent 8 hours at the farm helping to dig post holes for a fence that was being built at the time.

United Methodist Church
Extended Table
United Methodist Church offers the homeless and less fortunate of Glenwood Springs free meals every weeknight throughout the year. Volunteers from around the community bring food and serve the meals.
My family provided lasagna one night for Extended Table, and I spent 2 hours serving and helping to clean up afterwards. I was reminded how lucky I was to have food everyday, and not have to worry about where my next meal would come from.

Defiance Thrift Store/Glenwood Springs Police Department
I volunteered a total of 20 hours of my time in the community as part of a Youth Zone program that I completed. I volunteered 12 hours at Defiance Thrift Store which is a store that accepts donations of clothes, furniture, small appliances, and dishes and resells them for affordable prices to the public. The money goes to support LIFT-UP and the Family Visitor's Program in Glenwood Springs. Defiance also developed a recycling program that increases the amount of money they collect for the two non-profits they support and helps reduce the amount of trash that goes into the landfill. I helped sort through the donations and separate what could be resold and what needed to be recycled. I folded clothes, hung up clothes, and untangled about a million hangers. I accepted donations and helped load trucks with the stuff that was being shipped to Denver.
I also volunteered 8 hours at the Glenwood Springs Police Department. Part of the time I rode with one of the officers as he went about his typical day on the job. I watched what he had to do when he gave someone a ticket, and there was one arrest for drunk driving during my time in the squad car. For the rest of the time that I volunteered, I washed patrol cars.
